Sugar deals
I take this article with a grain of salt. http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2017-03-08/first-trade-war-shot-mexico-cancels-sugar-export-permits-us
The current U.S. Sugar Program was introduced in 1934 with the goal of lowering sugar production and raising sugar prices. Unfortunately for American consumers, businesses, and taxpayers, the sugar program has achieved its intended goal all too well. See:
Confectioners moved to Mexico, because of the US Sugar Lobby killing competition. The US Sugar Lobby remains the worst case of subsidy corruption in American history; probably the longest such case. As the first article states, this has been an ongoing issue even before NAFTA.
Artificial price supports, import quotas and tariffs, especially in the sugar "program" has destroyed competition in the market place, forced candy companies to move offshore, but primarily protecting the politically connected sugar industry at the expense of hard working Americans. No other industry, even oil, enjoys such largess. This is where both Union and Industry are in league with each other.
When we rethink NAFTA and draining the swamp, let's think about shutting out such special interests as the Sugar Lobby. I for one would be highly impressed of the current Administration tackles that one.
